ASYLUM WIN AT CIBOLA!

23-year-old Alpha won his asylum claim this week after spending months at the isolated Cíbola detention center in Milan, New Mexico. Alpha, from Guinea, won his case in part because a team of remote translators helped him translate his supporting documents from French to English.

People in immigration courts do not have a right to an appointed attorney. This means they often have to go up against government lawyers and hostile judges on their own. The situation becomes even more complicated when migrants don't speak English, who somehow have to learn the law and provide English translations of their supporting materials.

For the last few months, Detained Migrant Solidarity Committee has collaborated closely with organizers and legal service providers at Cíbola to help translate documents for detainees who have to represent themselves or rely on pro bono representation in immigration court.
