Statement on FOIA Request Demanding Information on Operation Mega and Future ICE Operations
Last week, information leaked that ICE was planning a massive raid on migrant communities across the country, named “Operation Mega.” This raid was supposed to target over 8,000 people in mid-September. When the news came out, ICE then said it had cancelled "Operation Mega." These raids cause terror in our communities and do little to promote public safety.
The Detained Migrant Solidarity Committee has documented ICE’s abuses and lack of accountability, and we demand accountability from ICE now so that our communities do not have to live in terror. We are submitting a Freedom of Information Act request to demand that ICE release information to the public about "Operation Mega" and any future plans to implement immigration raids in the borderlands. Our actions are part a national effort. Communities across the country are coming together this week to demand transparency from ICE and reject immigration raids.
This is not a time to panic. Instead, we to encourage our neighbors to inform themselves about their rights and join us to demand transparency and accountability from our government. In the upcoming weeks, DMSC will share Know Your Rights information on social media so that our community can be better prepared. We encourage people to share this information and connect to organizations working to defend our communities. Informed communities are strong communities.
We are committed to a community free of militarization, and to ending the criminalization of migration. Our community will hold ICE accountable and we will continue to support the rights and dignity of all our neighbors.
